(upbeat music) (gentle music) - There's been some definite silver linings of being home this long in a global pandemic.
As a independent musician, I spend most of my time on the road, which is such a privilege to do, and also really grueling on your body and sometimes your mental health.
So the last six months sleeping in my own bed is the longest I've been home in a really long time, but I really miss being on the road and seeing people all over the country and hope I can do it again someday soon.
The song I'll be playing today is called "January" and I wrote it on January 3rd, 2020.
I was feeling super optimistic about the year to come.
There was a lot of really exciting things that I was going to be doing that were on the calendar for Humbird and including touring to Europe for the first time and the West Coast, all these new places.
And obviously none of that happened, but I love playing the song because there's this optimism to it that really was completely incorrect, but still powerful.
And yeah, I like singing it 'cause I get a kick out of imagining the hopefulness of that person who wrote it at the beginning of this year and who the person I am now is really different but the song still resonates so that's part of why I liked playing it.
Hope it resonates for other people too.

The feeling that you have in front of a large crowd where you get to interact and like just get that energy and, you know, be close to people.
I most definitely look forward to the days when live shows come back.
Currently, I do a lot of work in the field of mindfulness, yoga, self healing, education of understanding your relationship with yourself, virtual classes, Zoom, all that stuff has been, you know, very clutch in my own survival, but also led me to step deeper into my purpose.
So yeah, the struggles of the pandemic led me to a much better place.
The song I'm performing is called "Float Tank" that came off an album that Big Cats and I, shout out Big Cats.

I chose this song because it really still resonates with everything that I'm about as a musician and a wellness instructor, really an affirmation or a reminder that with practice you can control the way that you perceive the world, the way that you interact with your body, the way that you interact with your emotions, really ultimately that you are the creator of your own story.

Like the mental health of it all already being an artist, it's like, it's a very internal thing and so to not be able to interact with people and other humans as much and perform together or just socialize, it's been difficult.

I recorded this song during the pandemic and it includes a majority of Latin American countries because I was supposed to go on a Latin American tour, my first Latin American tour as a McKnight Fellow and unfortunately we're all caught up and frozen with a pandemic, so instead of whining and pouting and feeling bad about it, it's like, you know, music still lives and you can travel through your music and still connect with those countries.

And we can't look at things the way that we normally did before because things aren't going to be normal and they shouldn't be normal, they shouldn't be going back to the way things were.
